CRC Annual Conference 2010 'Can we survive the perfect storm? - feeding
the world in 2030.
Wednesday 16th June at Pavilions of Harrogate (Yorkshire Show
Ground).
This will be on the theme
‘Can we survive the perfect storm? – feeding the world in 2030.’
A Day Conference looking at responses to this question and developing Key Action
Points for Policy Makers; the Church; & Individual Consumers.
‘The growing global population coming out of poverty will create
an increased demand for food which will need to be produced on not much more
land, using less water, fertilizer and pesticides than we have historically
done. Through the 21st century this is achievable, but must be tackled
coherently with other global challenges of climate change and energy, food and
water security. It is predicted that by 2030 the world will need to produce
around 50 per cent more food and energy, together with 30 per cent more fresh
water, whilst mitigating and adapting to climate change. This threatens to
create a ‘perfect storm’ of global events.’
John Beddington Chief Scientific. Advisor to HM Government.
The conference will be at The Pavilions of Harrogate (Yorkshire
Show Ground) on Wednesday 16th June, starting at 10am with coffee and finishing
at 3:30pm Speakers include Dr David Barling (Senior Lecturer in Food
Policy City University London), Prof Tim Gorringe (St Luke’s Professor of
Theological Studies, University of Exeter) & Mr Howard Petch CBE (Commission for
Rural Communities).
Affordable Warmth in Rural Communities?
Friday May 21st, Northallerton Methodist Church. Rural
people are struggling to heat their own homes, confirms a study. Rural fuel
poverty levels are increasing. Levels of fuel poverty in the countryside are now
more than three times the rate of five years ago, it found. Some 1.1m rural
homes are believed to be in fuel poverty – defined as a household which spends
more than 10% of its income on keeping warm. The research was conducted by the
Rural Services Network,
undertaking the study for the
Commission for Rural
Communities. Findings can be downloaded
here (Word
document). Current measures to tackle fuel poverty are inadequate given the
nature of rural housing stock across wide geographical areas, the network said.
CRC is holding this free event on affordable warmth to look at the
causes, the effects and some solutions. It is especially aimed at awareness -
raising for churches and others in rural communities, so that action can be
taken locally, as well as helping to raise the issue regionally and nationally.
The event will feature Peter Bridgstock of Hambleton District council, and Kath
McDaid, Regional Co-Ordinator for National Energy Action (who campaign on fuel
poverty nationally), as well as Bob Baker, who assists farmers, as one of the
rural development officers employed by CRC, and some of those affected by the
issues. This event was part of the European Year to Combat Poverty and Social
Exclusion, with events across Yorkshire & Humber coordinated by Church Action on
Poverty, and is part of CRC’s Faith To Engage project.

go_contemporary issues on slavery and justice
Held Friday 23rd February 2007, , KC Stadium,

This
conference aimed to provide information, inspiration and practical ideas from
major speakers and local grassroots action on the range of issues that still
remain 200 years after the landmark passing of the Abolition of Slave Trade Act.
In addition to an overview of black history and the legacy of the slave trade,
participants looked at new forms of slavery and injustice to equip them to make
local responses to issues in our local and global communities today. The outcome
is to reinforce a new legacy of hope.
