Manipulation or Motivation : How to make the most of the time, skills and experience of your volunteers.

Tuesday 17th March 2009, 9.45am -3.30pm Methodist Mission Huddersfield, 3-13 Lord Street, HD1 1QA.

Back by popular demand after Livability ran this event in April 2008, this event was being hosted by CRC, West Yorkshire Ecumenical Council and Livability.

With limited budgets, and staff, churches and community projects rely heavily on volunteers. But are we really looking after and listening to them? Do we make the most of their potential?  The day will cover: understanding motivations: why do people volunteer for Christian projects? Top tips on how to motivate others. The art of communication and how to deal with tricky issues.

The facilitators: David Arscott and Jon Kurht of the Community Mission Team at Livability.

Fair Finance? Second regional seminar on financial inclusion

June 30th 2006, 9.30 – 12.45, St Anne’s Cathedral Hall, Leeds

There is growing concern about the problems of access to affordable credit faced by poorer people trapping them in poverty and the need for new strategies to overcome this. The Churches Regional Commission for Yorkshire and the Humber invite you to attend a second regional seminar which includes national speakers from the banking sectors, to revisit issues, assess progress and examine potential solutions for our region. This follow up seminar aimed to consider ways of enabling more people to share in the region’s prosperity by making financial services as inclusive as possible.

It was particularly targeted towards decision makers in regional organisations, the financial sector and the voluntary sector and people in the churches and faith-based organisations.

The programme included:

  • Current issues Karen Wood,  Rural Communities Team and Citizens Advice Bureau
  • The Role of the Financial Sector Seymour Fortescue, Chief Executive of the Banking Standards Code Board and Karen Swainston, Regional Liaison Manager of Barclays Bank
  • New Approaches Eric Thompson, Chief Executive of Financial Inclusion Services Yorkshire
  • Faith Perspectives on Finance John Packer, Bishop of Ripon and Leeds and Mufti Yusuf Akudi, Muslim scholar
  • The Way Forward – Panel

A Briefing Paper published by CRC to introduce the issues, report on progress towards solutions and facilitate action within local communities is currently being updated following developments and the seminar event. The Paper will be free, and available to download from this website in the Autumn of 2006 or by request from CRC. You can also get in touch with the Social Inclusion Task Group leading this area of work via CRC with your comments and queries.
